Changes to elections in 2024

Source: Aberdeenshire Council

In 2024, Community Council elections changed, and for the first time all Aberdeenshire Community Councils were elected on the same date, with nominations sought for all spaces on all Community Councils.

Nominations to join the Community Council opened on 19 August 2024 and closed on 8 September 2024.

Community Councils are comprised of people who care about their community and want to make them a better place to live. We [Aberdeenshire Council] hope that previous members will want to continue representing their communities but are also keen to encourage new people to become involved and give up some of their time to sustain and develop their communities. Whatever your background, you have something to bring to your Community Council.

If there are not enough candidates to meet the minimum numbers to form the Community Council, a Community Council will not be able to be formed and this will leave a considerable gap in the representation of local views and involvement in development of policy and how your area develops and grows.

As a Community Councillor you will be provided with training and support and you will learn about how things work, get to develop and undertake projects and get a real sense of achievement when you see the difference you can make.

If you are interested in becoming a Community Councillor you can find the nomination forms at Community council elections:

Joining the Community Council between elections (co-option)

We’re always looking for new Community Councillors to represent the communities of Balmedie, Belhelvie, Potterton, Blackdog and Whitecairns.

There are lots of opportunities to work on issues and projects that matter to our communities such as local parks, speeding, planning applications, local development plans and supporting our communities during emergencies (resilience planning).

We also work closely with other community groups, the Police, Aberdeenshire Councillors and Aberdeenshire Council’s Formartine Area Office.

We can co-opt new members between elections to the Community Council so if you are interested in getting involved between elections please get in touch.
